Adulthood

“For in every adult there dwells the child that was, and in every child there lies the adult that will be.” ― John Connolly

Thinking about how life comes so fast inspired me to write this piece. Oh, how time flies! I am grateful to God for life and all the good things He has given me including growing older. Though it seems scary, I always remind myself: having the heart of a child is more important than whether I am 15 or 50. A heart that is full of Him. A heart that is shy of evil and negative things. This is what we should strive for as people. So, while I am finally coming to terms that I’m not a child again, I remain protective of my childlike heart. This to me, is worth more than gold. So I tell myself:

Adulthood, you came by so quickly
In the blink of an eye
You caught me unaware
Just when I thought I was preparing, you met me
You came with love, laughter and beauty
But also with pain, tough decisions and hurdles to climb

Adulthood, you came by so quickly
In the blink of an eye
You caught me unaware
Just when I thought I was preparing, you met me
You came with love, laughter and beauty
But also with pain, tough decisions and hurdles to climb

I was young and all I asked myself was “when will I be big?”
I saw strength in being independent
I saw beauty in being free
All I didn’t see were the battles I must win
The responsibilities I must handle
The decisions I must make
And the generations I must not fail

Though you came in within a blink
You will not overthrow me
I will learn while at it like the newbie learning on the job
Though the hurdles seem hard to climb
I will conquer knowing there are no difficulties for her whose mind is made up
Though the responsibilities stare hard in the face
I will rest knowing I am well equipped for this
Even when you come with battles seemingly too big to surmount
I know they are preparing me for the great future ahead
So my life becomes a story of Faith
And footprints left in the sands of time…
