“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” ― Henri Matisse
In the midst of our busy lives, we often overlook the joy of living in the moment. Work, social media, and other distractions can prevent us from appreciating the beauty of life and nature. For instance, as children, we eagerly anticipated picnics with friends or groups. However, increasing industrialization and modernization have made nature’s beauty less appreciated, with green spaces quickly turning into modern buildings. Despite the hustle and bustle, finding ways to unwind is essential.
Picnics offer the perfect escape from life’s busyness, providing the tranquillity of greenery, fresh air, and open spaces. Studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress and boosts mood. I have personally experienced this rejuvenation after picnics, feeling energized from interacting with like-minded people and enjoying nature’s beauty. This made me realize how important it is to intentionally live our lives amid everyday chaos.
As I reflected on this, I considered the staple foods Nigerians could bring to picnics. While planning a picnic can be stressful, thoughtful preparation can make it easier. One important tip I find really helpful is to use disposable plates and cups instead of breakable ones. Disposables simplify post-picnic clean-up, allowing for easy disposal of plates, cutlery, and packaging. While some washing is inevitable, it can be minimised with thoughtful preparation.
To help with better planning, I have listed thirteen food ideas to enhance your picnic experience.
- Sandwiches
- Small chops: samosas, spring rolls, puff puff, chinchin, groundnut, etc.
- Plantain chips
- Gizdodo
- Popcorn
- Grilled chicken
- Chicken wraps
- Cookies/biscuits
- Fruit salad
- Jollof rice: In my opinion, jollof rice is the best option for a picnic. Not only is it a crowd favourite, but it also stays fresh longer compared to fried rice. Rice and stew might not be ideal because the stew can spill. It’s important to consider these factors when planning a picnic.
- Jollof spaghetti
- Fried yam and sauce
- Pizza
Amidst the chaos of our daily routines, it is vital to find moments to unwind and reconnect with the simple joys of life. Picnics serve one perfect remedy, offering a retreat into nature. Careful planning, including the use of disposable items for easy clean-up and selecting appropriate foods, will enhance the picnic experience. So, gather your favourite picnic essentials, choose your best food options ranging from jollof rice to grilled chicken, and enjoy the moment.
